Do you want to go "fast" or "slow"?

There are so many options that it's mind blowing. If you give me a budget, along with your weight and shoe size, I'll make some recommendations.

I'm 255 lbs
size 12 shoe

I envision myself "carving" hills more than straight bombing. The memory of 1980's speed wobbles is re-surfacing, so speed probably won't be the rush (but who knows?)

Again, I'm thinking 40"-ish, longboard type trucks (do they even help for speed wobbles?), and big sticky wheels? In my mind, this seems like something that is "in the middle" and I will be able to use various parts for future buys? Am I right?

I don't really have a budget. I would just like to have a decent "middleground" type of set-up that I could ride on some of the famous hills around here with some dudes that pretty much only longboard and not look like a fucking idiot. I WILL be trying out some of their set-ups, but apparently the posse has grown such that the main dude usually has all of his boards loaned out to those that don't own and a few have already developed favorites? So, I wanted something to ride so I don't have to be the one driving most of the time (or however they get back up the hill) when I go with these guys that are really into it. I figure I have a learning curve to catch up on with these guys.....I woudn't want to feel like I'm stealing some other bro's run while I'm learning (you know?) And I've wanted a longboard for a while and the closest thing I've ever got was a hosoi PP 36" hammerhead.

Thanks for all the input!!!
VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

Later
Jason

3 good fun setups:

ICBP (Inner City Bank Planks) 41X10.5
Indy 215's
Abec11 66m Strikers 84a
*Awesome concave all the way to the end of the nose, superfun ride-- could easily work with Randal 180's, Crails etc

Fibreflex Kicktail 44
Randal II 150's
Comet 68mm 80a (now switched to Abec 11 70mm Grippins, 81a)
About 1/4 inch riser
* nice gentle flex (I weigh more than you do) slight concave, sweet carver

Skaterbuilt Trim Deluxe 39.5 x 9.5
old Indy 131's
66mm Retro ZigZags
1/2 inch riser
*killer concave, super responsive very stiff board

All of these boards are a blast. Unless you have cutouts or a pintail or something, I would keep the wheels 70mm and under.

Man... I STILL have a 48" custom Chris Rempel swallowtail that I got from BartD that I haven't set up yet.

This one:

The grip on it looks like sand thrown into the clearcoat.

I need to find some trucks and whatnot.

Hmm...

Take a look at the Subsonic Swift decks that I've got on my site. They're stiff, versatile, and easy to setup w/o dropping a ton of dough.

Jason,

Like yourself, I've recently made the decision to checkout the whole longboarding scene.

Although I haven't yet received all of the components that will make-up my longboard, below I have provided a checklist of the components I've selected:

1.) 46" x 9.5" Lowered "Kracked Skulls" Longboard Deck
2.) Randall R-II 180 Trucks
3.) Abec 11 "Gumballs" 76mm 81a
4.) Abec Biltin Bearings

The deck and trucks are available on eBay as a combo deal at a good price.

For the first time in years, I'm stoked to put together a new set-up.

I'd love feedback from the longboard veterans regarding my choices.

Thanks,

Jim

My initial feeling is to get a "longer" board that is still pretty much like a regular deck. I am really more interested and feel like I would be most comfortable on something with a kick-tail to it than a flat deck. I know I won't really be using the tail, but it's in my mind that way for some reason?

How about this Subsonic:

And maybe look at Holey trucks rather than Randalls

Wow!

Talk about selection...

Subsonicskateboards.com certainly lets the customer have it their way.

I originally considered purchasing a complete from BustinBoards.com, but felt that the choices were a bit too limited (I really wanted to ride Gumballs ).

Steve,

What benifits do the Holey trucks hold over than Randalls?

Here are mine. The bigger one I bought from Milehighskates.com. Great guy to deal with. I didnt' know much about these and still really don't but he has some great knowledge of these also an awesome selection of whatever style of riding you are looking for.
Mine are not built for racing or anything like that I just cruise and carve. Super smooth ride and a blast.

MileHighSkates.com also has a great selection.

I was checking out the Lush "Spooky" pictured below which is offered on the MileHighSkates site, but it was a bit too pricey considering I've never ridden a longboard. Oddly enough, it comes equipped with the Holey Trucks previously mentioned.
