I ride random bearings... when it comes down to racing, as long as they are properly maintained and clean, they are just as fast as anything else. This is in my experience, I've done lots of high speed riding with other riders who rock the ceramics and there are way more important factors than just having fast bearings.
For commuting, I find that any bearing will do the job... I think changing your wheel size to something around 75mm would be more beneficial than getting ceramics. Commuting with 90mm wheels is pretty uncommon, considering the amount of pushing you have to do before getting up to speed. With a smaller wheel you will accelerate much quicker and still go a decent distance. It's the perfect compromise.
In terms of speedboarding and bearings, there are other factors rather than having fast bearings. Your tuck and how solid you are in it are way more important. If you can be a rock and very still, you will be much faster than a fella who has really good bearings and a mediocre tuck. Anything past that, it boils down to skill and experience. Some riders want the extra edge of ceramic bearings, but I've yet to notice a real difference. |

You will.
I get calls from all over Canada from well known racers looking for ceramic Nuclear Missiles and ceramic Rockets. Did some ceramic Biltins and loaded ceramics in stainless Skookums on special order as well.
So I know they're out there.
There's a point were you simply can't go faster with skill and experience. That's when technology comes in.
The correct wheel choice is critical as well. |

I agree with you in that sense, once you've peaked (much like Kevin), every little bit helps to gain that extra few km/h. I plan on taking my racing much more serious this season, I might shout at ya Blair. |

I see more DH guys buying bulk 100 bearing lots from VBX and off Ebay than using high end stuff day in day out. Yes many guys keep a set of something special for race day but by and large most guys who like speed prefer to throw bearings away rather than clean them. The real high end bearing sluts are the slalom geeks. I've never seen so many ceramic bearings as at an outlaw slalom race |

About slalom nerds? No, perfectly accurate. I resemble that remark.
There's a lot of us that do slalom, downhill, street, vert, ditches... all of it. |

For downhill, bearings mean nothing... Anyone who tells your otherwise, is talking out of their arse.
Cruising, park and slalom are a totally different story. |
